Getting unstuck: How to get going when you don't know where to start
Maybe you have a budding idea, or a new goal, or you’re trying to start a new hobby or a new side gig. But all your brain offers you is “I don’t know where to start.”
We hear this all the time. It sounds thoughtful. Responsible.
Like you’re trying to do it right.
Often, all that leads to is looking externally, going down internet rabbit holes, and not actually getting started.
And it just reinforces the story that you don’t know where to start.
Your brain says, “Once I feel clear, then I’ll get going.”
But clarity isn’t something you arrive at first and then move. It shows up as you take action.
Waiting to know with certainty what comes first is one of the most common ways we buffer against the anxiety of taking a leap and creating something new.
You research. You think. You plan. You tweak the plan. You’re not “wasting time”, you’re just trying to find the perfect plan.
Meanwhile, nothing actually changes.
Clarity is built through action.
You take a step.
You notice what works and what doesn’t.
You adjust.
You keep going.
That’s how things come into focus.
You already know this, by the way.
You didn’t wait to feel clear before becoming a physician, a parent, or a partner. You learned by doing. By showing up imperfectly. By figuring it out as you went.
The goal isn’t to find the perfect starting point.
It’s to bravely choose a starting point, any starting point.
Start there. Let clarity catch up to you. We promise it will.
