That didn't go as planned: Obstacles might actually be the path

Apr 28, 2026

Ever have one of those weeks where it feels like you took three steps forward… and then tripped over your own shoelaces?

The plan changed.
The kid got sick.
The meeting didn’t go how you hoped.
Your energy vanished mid-Tuesday.

It’s easy to interpret that as: “I’m off track.”

But what if you’re not off track at all?

The Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius used to remind himself that obstacles aren’t interruptions to the path. They are the path.

Not because they’re fun.
Not because we’d choose them.
But because they are built into a human life.

We spend so much energy trying to avoid setbacks. Or worse, trying to make them mean something about us.

But peace doesn’t come from avoiding the wobble.
It comes from staying grounded in your values, even when things wobble.

You can’t control what happens this week.
But you can decide not to use it as evidence against yourself.

While they can be difficult, every unexpected turn is an opportunity to come back home to who you are.

And from there, you can keep navigating the path of life.

We usually tell ourselves these things because we're trying to stop. A little guilt should help, right? Except it does the opposite. Now you're not just...
Don't think about this: There is a difference between growth and tolerance
You’re learning how to shift your thoughts. And you’re getting kinda good at it.Maybe even a little competitive about it? You’re in a difficult situation and you go to work.Reframing. Searching for a more helpful angle. There must be a way to choose a thought that makes this feel okay. All this thought work feels productive. You want to be an A+ self-coacher. But sometimes thought work turns into...
You're not late: What if this is exactly when it happens
After a long, long time of not exercising consistently, the two of us crossed over the 6-month mark of meeting daily at 5:30am to do strength training.  While every once in a while our brains offer us thoughts of pride in our consistency, way too often we hear the internal refrain of “I should have started this years ago.”  Exercising.Writing.Saving.Setting boundaries.Making that change you kee...
