The guilt snack nobody ordered: A sneaky reason urges stick around

Jun 09, 2026

Ever notice how quickly a harmless urge turns into a full-blown self-improvement project?

You're scrolling your phone. And then your brain jumps in:

"I should be able to put this down."
"Why am I doing this again?"
"This is such a waste of time."

We usually tell ourselves these things because we're trying to stop.

A little guilt should help, right?

Except it does the opposite.

Now you're not just scrolling. You're scrolling while feeling guilty.

You're not just eating the cookie. You're eating the cookie while feeling ashamed.

And what do humans tend to do when they feel guilt, shame, stress, or discomfort?

We look for relief.

A little distraction.
A little comfort.
A little dopamine.

Which makes the phone, the cookie, the online shopping cart, or whatever your thing is, even more appealing.

The very lecture meant to stop the behavior can end up fueling it. It's a frustrating cycle.

Instead of adding judgment, try adding curiosity.

"Huh. I'm having a strong urge to scroll right now."
"Interesting. I keep reaching for my phone."
"Yep. There's that urge again."

Not because curiosity magically makes urges disappear.
But because shame never helps.

Awareness creates space.

And space gives you access to something much more useful than guilt: Choice.

Searching for a more helpful angle. There must be a way to choose a thought that makes this feel okay. All this thought work feels productive. You want to be an A+ self-coacher. But sometimes thought work turns into...
You're not late: What if this is exactly when it happens
After a long, long time of not exercising consistently, the two of us crossed over the 6-month mark of meeting daily at 5:30am to do strength training.  While every once in a while our brains offer us thoughts of pride in our consistency, way too often we hear the internal refrain of “I should have started this years ago.”  Exercising.Writing.Saving.Setting boundaries.Making that change you kee...
When it's hard to be kind: The kind of self-care that actually helps
Self-love gets marketed as bubble baths and daily affirmations. We like a good bath as much as the next exhausted physician mom.But that’s not the kind of self-love that truly impacts your life. Real self-love is quieter. And braver.        It’s telling yourself the truth without turning it into a character assassination.        It’s saying, “I didn’t handle that the way I wanted to.” Instead of...
