When regret sneaks in: Let go of regret and make decisions with ease

Jan 30, 2025

You know that moment when you're sitting in yet another committee meeting thinking "Why did I say yes to this?" (Yeah, we've been there too.) Or maybe it's that late-night spiral of "I should have spent more time..."

And then there’s that familiar feeling of regret.

Regret has a sneaky way of making us doubt our next move. Take that hospital committee you joined because it seemed important at the time. Now you're stretched thin, questioning your choice, and maybe even hesitating on other opportunities because... well, what if you choose "wrong" again?

We think that holding on to regret will somehow protect us from future “mistakes”, but, weirdly, it makes us more susceptible to making decisions that aren’t fully intentional.

And sometimes good decisions have undesired outcomes. When you can separate the outcome from your ability to make choices, it gets a whole lot easier to think clearly about what works for you right now. Instead of getting stuck in "I should have known better," you can move to your next dilemma with more confidence.

Regret never means you’re a bad decision-maker.

Sometimes just knowing this can add a little ease in your decision-full life.

So I guess I'm handling this: If only resentment could make others change
Resentment tends to show up in people who are generous, capable, and very good at handling things. It usually doesn’t start as anger. It starts as accommodation. Saying yes because it feels easier. Staying quiet to keep things smooth. Taking one for the team. At first, this can look like maturity. Or professionalism. Or being low maintenance. Then something shifts. You notice a tightness. A sho...
